The goal of this course is to deepen students' understanding of democracy today by viewing it through the lens of gender and sexuality. Particular attention has to be given to the concept of the political, norms gender and the political subjectivity. The relation between the state and social movements will be a fundamental focus of this seminar, given the debates about the ambiguity of "participationism" and "assimilationism" as political strategies. Special attention will also be given to the effects of political actions on subjectivity and everyday life. Readings will include work by Judith Butler, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe and Jacques Ranciere, among others. Throughout the semester, we will take a comparative approach, exploring the Brazilian context as well as that of other Latin American countries.
Open to Graduate students only.
