Poet, playwright, dramaturge, stage director, screenwriter, musician, painter, and artist, Federico Garcia Lorca also symbolizes the resistance to Francoist repression and has become an icon for LGBT and left-wing activists. His figure epitomizes the collective memory of the Spanish Civil War, and he is arguably the most canonical author in twentieth-century Spanish literature. This course will study Lorca's poetic and dramatic production, and the body of criticism of his texts paying special attention to the use of critical theory in the analysis of his works. We will also analyze how Lorca's life and work have been used in the building of collective identities in Spain. Additional materials will include secondary bibliography, and stage and screen adaptations of his plays. Conducted in Spanish.
