ANIMLSCI H200 covers introductory molecular and cell biology topics. In the honors colloquium for this course, scientific articles are discussed in small groups and methods described in class are demonstrated in a laboratory setting. Students will gain hands-on experience with molecular methods such as PCR amplification of genomic DNA and interpretation of the resulting sequences. We also demonstrate protein purification, and analysis using gel electrophoresis and western blots. Cell culture and live cell imaging using transfection of membrane-GFP and Nuclear-mCherry, will be used to follow cell behavior, compartments and traficking. Each year a different topic may be selected to demonstrate how techniques are used to answer specific scientific questions. In parallel, the group analysis of scientific articles addressing the context of the scientific questions allows the students to develop critical reading, communication and thinking skills.
