This course is an intensive 4-credit hour course that meets 2.5 hours per week, with critical reading, discussion, writing, and analysis of texts, images, and films as its components. It is an academic reading-writing course, designed for the undergraduate non-native speakers of English (NNS) writers; however, interested graduate students are also welcome to enroll. The students who enroll must have achieved, at least, an advanced level of English language proficiency. Using diverse global perspectives and content, students will analyze the positions of audience and purpose within persuasive readings and will use a process approach to writing expository, argumentative, and persuasive texts.
ESL 290F is suitable for international or domestic undergraduate students who 1) have already taken ESL 130 Advanced Composition 2) are currently enrolled in or have already taken EN 111 Basic Writing or 3) are currently enrolled in or have already taken EN 112 College Writing.. English language instruction is integrated throughout the writing process. In addition, the course is appropriate for international graduate students whose disciplinary studies in the humanities demand extensive writing at high levels of expertise. Students improve their writing by practicing writing relevant to their own fields of study.
