Resilience is the ability to adapt and recover quickly after difficulties or dramatic change. Psychologists study resilience as an important aspect of mental health, but it is also an idea that is applied to the economy and to the environment. Scholars and social activists are increasingly making connections between these different ideas of resilience and applying them to personal and societal responses to economic and environmental challenges. Each week we?ll read and discuss or debate an article that uses the idea of resilience. Grading will be based on class participation and a short final project applying the idea of resilience to some aspect of the student?s life or to policies and practices at UMass.
