After over 50 years of filmmaking and in anticipation of a full-career MoMA retrospective and tour in 2016, the course will focus on the work of Daniele Huillet and Jean Marie Straub. Topics of emphasis will include: 1960s film and political modernism; Brecht and film theory; film aesthetics from the silent era in the contemporary context, film and painting, etc. Literature and opera upon which Straub/Huillet films are based, as distinct from film adaptation, will also be considered.
The course will be conducted in English, with students expected to read French, German or Italian texts in the original if they are able.
