This course will examine a series of topics related to urban inequality and poverty. it will use the television series, The Wire, as a foundation for understanding various topics in urban inequality such as crime, incarceration, work and labor markets, the unregulated economy, and education. Rather than approaching the topic from the perspective of film or visual studies, this course will approach the study of urban inequality through the lens of social science. This course is not intended to teach students about the show. It is intended to use the show as vehicle for interrogating topics germane to social inequality.
