Contemporary writers have used constraints to spur creativity in many ways: in this course, we will consider a memoir written in Facebook lists; a poem inscribed in a ?chemical alphabet? within a strand of DNA; a novel written in only questions and one written without the letter E; an essay collection written as a collage of found texts; and many other literary and multimedia works that use constraints to break new ground. Students are encouraged to engage with these works in two ways: by writing weekly reflections on the pieces, or by attempting to use constraint-based techniques to create their own original creative works.
