The issue of immigration has always been a controversial topic in U.S. society and becomes even more of a hotbutton
issue during election years. This course will examine how the issue of immigration has become
sensationalized among politicians and the public, and how sociology can be used to understand immigration as fully
as possible -- who, why, and how different groups immigrate to the U.S. and what happens once they arrive and how they are received by mainstream society and how they adjust to their new country. Weekly topics include settlement, identity, assimilation, discrimination, employment, language, legal status, and political participation.
