This seminar trains students in historical research techniques and the writing of history, and fulfills the University's Junior Writing requirement. See the History Department course description guide for various sectional sub-titles and descriptions.
Open to Seniors and Juniors in History, Middle East and Judaic majors only. China and the US: This writing seminar will explore cultural and political relations between China and the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. Readings will include travel narratives, missionary and diplomatic accounts, popular press coverage and other sources that bring to life what China has meant to Americans, and what America has meant to Chinese, over the course of the last two centuries. Short regular writing assignments will lead up to a longer research paper at the end of the course. History 115 or equivalent background in Chinese history recommended. Must not have completed History 592U.
