This seminar will focus on research the instructor is compiling to produce a book on an ecological approach to landscape design for Cape Cod and the Islands (Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket).
Research Topics:
-What's wrong with conventional landscape design practice in Cape Cod and the Islands? Water-intensive, nutrient runoff, impact on native species and ecosystems, loss of sense-of-place
-What are the best current examples of an ecologically-based, ecosystem-appropriate, environmentally-responsible, and beautiful landscapes? (public, conservation, institutional, commercial and residential)
-What species and species compositions are characteristic of Cape and Islands Landscapes - the natural landscape as template/model) (beach, dunes, sand plain grasslands, sand plain heathlands, old fields, scrub forest, Pitch Pine, Oak forests, Coastal Marsh, bogs.
-Simulations/visualizations of progressive/incremental landscape naturalization for example, a typical residence/business with 30%, 60% or 90% of "conventional" landscape replaced with ecological landscapes.
-Compilation of reference materials, websites, books.
-Concise Geological/Natural History of the Cape and Islands
-Literary quotes about the landscapes of Cape Cod and the Islands
-Other topics may be developed, or suggested by students in the seminar
