This interdisciplinary one-credit First Year Seminar introduces students on the exploratory track to the different areas of study, methods, and concepts offered by the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences through the lens of the writings of Latin American author Jorge Luis Borges. By reading selected short stories, essays, and poems by Borges - in conjunction with other materials by US Latin@, Brazilian, and Afro Latin American and Caribbean authors - students are asked to consider a wide variety of topics such as (auto)ethnography, resource economics, politics, society, community engagement, geography and mapping, mathematics, social justice, gender and sexuality, race relations, fantasy and reality, globality and locality, Latin America in the world and the world in Latin America, indigeneity, migration, and diaspora, among others.
