An inquiry into the modern representation of war, this course focuses on a variety of conflicts, with particular attention to recent wars where "the whole world was watching." We examine a variety of media: photography, film, poetry, memoir, and fiction, as well as testimony and documentaries. Knowing what happened, and why, is the goal of any serious student of history, yet the first practical step -- and the one to be emphasized in this course -- is to learn the language through which history is spoken. No prerequisites.
