This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. The student and sponsoring instructor must fill out a contract, which is available at the Bloom Honors Advising Center - 201 Commonwealth Honors College. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study. Submission can be done during pre-registration and should be done so that registration can be completed by the end of the add-drop period.
Students must apply through CHC PATHS to add this course Students wishing to register for an Honors Independent Study must complete a contract with their faculty sponsor using CHC PATHS (honors.umass.edu/chc-paths/) for online approval by their sponsor and other reviewers, including the Academic Standards Committee of the Faculty Senate's Commonwealth Honors College Council. Once fully approved it will be registered in SPIRE by Commonwealth Honors College. The 1-2 credit option is an additional component tied to any University course of at least 3 credits at the 300 level, with course instructor approval. The 3-6 credit option is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor. APPLICATION CAN BE DONE DURING PRE-REG AND SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED BEFORE CLASSES START TO ENSURE THAT REGISTRATION CAN BE COMPLETED BEFORE ADD/DROP ENDS.
