This course provides an introduction to the historical evolution of the field of public health: from Hippocrates to war and industrialization; from the sanitary movement and quarantine to the development of public health boards; and to the ethical concerns linked to the management and control of disease and promotion of health. In the second half of the semester, we will investigate the historical origins of current health issues to illustrate some of the underlying tensions in public health research and programming.
Open to junior and senior Public Health majors only.
