Strategic planning refers to a process by which an organization maps its future by trying to understand its present and future environments, along with its internal strengths and weaknesses. The process is one of learning and is built heavily upon the analysis of an organization's future external opportunities and threats, and current internal capabilities to influence those external factors. Strategic planning and analysis has become an essential management function within the health service industry. As there is increased patient demand on the healthcare field, increased state and federal regulations, lower reimbursement rates, and sicker populations, health service organizations must understand and plan how to navigate these turbulent elements to reach future prosperity. This course provides students with the knowledge and the skills to positively participate in the strategic planning and analysis process. It is designed to inform and prepare students with the competencies necessary to impact the long-term success of health service organizations.
