Developing countries face a significant challenge in the realm of public health, and due to the twin effects of poor quality of the environment and lack of access to affordable healthcare, mortality rates associated with environment-induced health effects are very high. Lower literacy levels, poverty, and other socio-political factors can further compound the problem. The objective of the course is to provide an overview of different environmental issues in developing countries, and the associated health effects. Topics covered include air and water pollution, solid waste management and vector-borne diseases as well as topics of international relevance such as refugee crises and association environmental and health issues. Using specific case-studies and personal experience, discussions during each seminar will focus on aspects including science behind the problem, environmental justice, sustainability and vulnerability, and will draw on experiences on issues faced by populations across countries and regions, with specific reference to developing countries.
Open to seniors and juniors in Public Health, Kinesiology, Communication Disorders, or Nutrition. This course is open to Public Health, Kinesiology and Communication Disorders Seniors only from November 12-November 16. On November 17 Nutrition Seniors may enroll as well, and then on November 19 it will be open to Juniors in Public Health, Kinesiology, Communication Disorders and Nutrition as well.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
