Survey/analysis of origins of modern Boston and its development as a metropolis in the context of Massachusetts and U.S. history, from 19th-century industrial beginnings to present. Boston and the state as typologies for urbanization in the nation. Subjects include: creation of factory towns and women and child labor, Irish immigration, industrial history in the Gilded Age; urbanization, class conflict, immigration/assimilation, machine politics and reform, urban renewal and the rise of service and high-technology industries, racism, school desegregation, and violence in Boston and the metropolitan area. Open to Seniors, Juniors & Sophomores only.
