Hans Eisler, together with Adorno, is one of the major 20th century theorists of film music. At the same time, Eisler was a prolific composer of soundtracks. This seminar examines films from the diverse periods of Eisler's activity: Weimar Germany; Hollywood Exile; Communist East Germany. Our focus will be the evolving role of music and sound in relation to narrative (and genre convention) in changing political and historical constellations.
