The development of social, political, economic, and intellectual life in the United States from 1876 to the 1980s. Topics include late 19th-century industrialization, the farm crisis, urbanization; emergence as a world power; the Progressive Era; the 1920s, the Depression, World War II; domestic problems and foreign relations since 1945. Several sections, some emphasizing films. (Gen.Ed. HS)
This course will provide students with an understanding of the
contours of American history from the period of Reconstruction through
the late twentieth century. The course explores the politics and
culture of the period, as well as the interactions of race, class, and
gender in U.S. history. Particular attention will be paid to African
American history, Native American history, and women?s history.
Primary source readings will be emphasized.
