This course examines and analyzes the political, economic, and culture history, content, and implications of how people of color (primarily Blacks, Latinx/Hispanics, Asian Americans, American Indians, and Arab & Middle Eastern Americans) have been portrayed and represented in mainstream U.S. media and popular culture. Using readings, class discussions, films & videos, and student-designed projects, students will engage in informed discussion and critical analysis of issues such as colonialism, slavery, immigration and exclusion, early Hollywood movies, civil rights, modern multiculturalism, sports, Whitewashing and cultural appropriation/ erasure, globalization, and corporate versus social media, to name just a few.
