This seminar seeks to analyze images of queerness in films produced and distributed around the world since the 1900s until today. Introducing film studies vocabulary and frameworks we will discuss critically the multiple, and often, contradictory meanings of queerness. We will explore differences and similarities in queer experiences, investigating the relation between film and context of production: social, historical and political as well as artistic, literary, and musical movements. Emphasis will be placed on the dissemination of common images among countries and time periods, identification of stereotypes and counter-stereotypes. Attention will be paid to the cinematic and narrative techniques at play in the recreation and challenge of traditional images of queerness.
Open to first-year Humanities and Fine Arts Exploratory Track students and first-year HFA Majors.
