Health - physical, emotional, and social - is a crucial pillar of human well-being. Recognizing health as a fundamental human right means investigating the reasons why some have adequate health care while others do not, and why some populations disproportionately suffer from disease and ill health. This seminar will examine the underlying social and political determinants of illness, especially as connected to war and conflict. What do we mean by the "underdevelopment of health" and how do we understand global health issues and disparities in their historical contexts? How does privatization of resources, water for example, affect people' health conditions? We will critically look at these questions to better reflect on what needs to change to provide and sustain quality healthcare for all.

Open to students in the Public Health Exploratory Track and first-year Public Health, Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Communication Disorders majors.
