The aim of this course is to introduce undergraduate students to Global Mental Health, which has been defined as ?the area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving mental health and achieving equity in mental health for all people worldwide,? but its key concerns are in low- and middle-income countries. The course will provide students with a multi-disciplinary (public health, sociology, anthropology, epidemiology and psychology) understanding of the field and several of challenges facing it. Topics will include: concepts of mental health and mental illness; the global burden of disease and mental health issues in low resource countries; social inequalities in the risk for mental ill-health; stigma and discrimination; the human rights of individuals with mental illnesses; mental health and psychosocial support in humanitarian settings; and mental health systems and resources in low- and middle-income countries.
