The Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is best known for his nearly 200 tales and stories. Andersen's overall literary legacy, however, also includes novels, poems, dramas, and travel books. This course offers students the opportunity to gain an appreciation of Andersen the complete artist. We will begin the course by examining some of Andersen's most popular tales. Over the course of the semester, we will also read and discuss two of Andersen's novels, a selection of his poems, one travel book, and one of his plays, interspersed with a diverse sampling of additional tales.
