In recent years, there has been an anxiety in Catalonia and the Spanish state over becoming a modern European nation. Playwriting has responded by dealing with topics such drug use, sexualities, youth culture, and social problems. This course examines the social, historical and cultural transformation Spain and Catalonia have undergone by studying plays of the last twenty-five years. We will read plays by Lluisa Cunille, Juan Mayorga, Paloma Pedrero and Sergi Belbel among others. Readings will be supplemented with adaptations of the plays in theatre, film, and television. Course requirements include translating, playwriting, and stage readings. Readings in Spanish, or Catalan for capable students. Taught in Spanish.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
