This graduate seminar looks at American Art of the 1920s and 1930s, assessing the aesthetic ideas of the Jazz Age through the Depression. We will explore American Modernism through the lens of abstraction, realism, politics, dystopia, and other themes in painting, film, photography and design. As we examine American art of this period, we will also be charting cultural history through readings in American history and important novels of the 1920s and 30s. Our purpose will be to learn about the art and competing movements of this period, but also to achieve a fuller view of the cultural and historical movements.
Open to Graduate students only.
