In this course, students will learn advanced level Korean through modern Korean history. Students will achieve deeper understanding of Korean culture and society through a lens of history. Students will read the main course material in Korean and discuss major events and the meanings of them in the Korean historical context. Students will also read reference materials in both English and Korean to gain a deeper understanding of the historical events. To make the material understandable, various types of media will be used such as movies, literature, songs, news, pictures and the television and radio programs, etc. Students will get a strong foundation in modern history starting from the late Chosun period to present. By the end of the course, students will be able to describe, narrate, compare, and report a paragraph level discourse in a coherent manner. Students will also be able to talk about abstract concepts.
Prerequisite: Eqivalent proficiency of 3rd year Korean
