This course is open to Commonwealth Honors College students only. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN COMPSCI 250. REQUESTS TO TAKE THE HONORS COLLOQUIUM AFTER COMPLETING 250 WITH A GRADE OF B OR BETTER WILL BE CONSIDERED, WITH INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION. STUDENTS NEEDING SPECIAL PERMISSION MUST REQUEST OVERRIDES VIA THE ON-LINE FORM: https://www.cics.umass.edu/overrides.
We will have weekly readings from Godel, Esher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter.This book contains mathematical problems related to the main course material, and presents some of the same topics as well as others. Students will report on their reading in the seminar, and we will discuss connections between the book and the CS 250 material. Each student will make an oral presentation on a topic of their choice at the end of the term.
