This seminar will introduce a metaphorical scene where a human cell is scaled to the size of a campus. The class will feature a 10 to the 8th magnified cell, overlaid on UMass campus, in order to have an approachable and immersive view of a cell's layout and behaviors. From this viewpoint, comparison between cell and campus will show us similarities in organization and structures, movements of information and materials, and an overarching themes of modularity. Upon the cell as a campus framework, we will explore some exotic realities of the cellular world, such as the speeds, forces, and concentrations of the molecular components within. The goal of the seminar is to have a fun time, and create useful cellular contexts into which future learnings may easily fit.
Open to Natural Sciences Freshman with a declared major or on the Natural Sciences Exploratory Track.
