The course will address elementary concepts in continuum mechanics: conserved scalar and vector fields, equations of motions, and the stress tensor. We will apply this formalism to study the basic equations of fluid mechanics for simple and complex fluids, and will characterize viscous and inertial phenomena. The course will also discuss the basic equations of elasticity of solid bodies and other types of condensed matter, and will emphasize the interplay of mechanics and geometry in this field.
