Beginning with an overview of the Civil Rights movement, this course examines the influences that came to shape the call for Black Power: remnants of the Garvey movement; the Cuban revolution; the Nation of Islam; the political decolonization of Africa; and reactions by African Americans to the violence engendered by non-violent protest for civil rights. Diverse interpretations of Black Power will be examined in detail, along with reasons for the movement's decline.
