It is often said that Islam is a quintessentially political religion, that it recognizes no separation between politics and religion or, sometimes, that it unequivocally calls for the creation of an Islamic state. However, what does it mean for a religion to have a political vision? This course will survey some of the main themes and concepts in Islamic political thought. Students will study the building blocks of orthodox Islamic political thought situated within the tradition of Islamic law.
