The professional development seminar provides an opportunity for SPHHS students to reflect upon their professional work experience. It will focus on their transition from college into the professional world, as well as how to tie in what they have learned academically to a practical work environment. Students evaluate their knowledge, skills, abilities, and interests as they develop and/or refine their career goals. Students also explore their own identities, their professional and personal relationships as they reflect on their role in public health and community health generally, and their own career roles specifically.
Students learn business ethics, professionalism in the workplace, communication skills within a multi-generational workforce, and address issues of work/life balance-which includes managing finances, budgeting, and taxes. Additionally, students refine networking skills, learn how to evaluate benefits package, and negotiate salary. The seminar will allow students to share weekly updates; concerns and problem solve any specific issues they are facing on their internships. As much as possible, opportunities to visit public health/community health organizations, and have guest speakers will be incorporated into the curriculum. The Professional Development Seminar provides a creative and reflective atmosphere that encourages students to participate in their own learning while preparing for their future.
