The nature of culture and its role in creating forms of social, economic, and political life in diverse historical and geographical contexts. Readings drawn from contemporary ethnographies of various peoples, analyzing the persistence of cultural diversity in the midst of global social and socioeconomic forces. (Gen.Ed. SB, DG)
Open to first-year students in the Global Viewpoints RAP in Emerson Hall. Students in Global Viewpoints RAP in Emerson Hall will enroll together in "Culture, Society & People" (Anthropology 104). This course provides an introduction to the field of cultural anthropology: the study of how people make meaning within and as a result of their social contexts. We will dig into the theory, logistics, and ethical questions raised in the discipline through study of what cultural anthropologists do: ethnography.
