This introductory course provides students with an understanding of the essential concepts and obstacles to women and girls' education including social and cultural challenges, gender gap in education, and educational responses at the international, national, and local levels. This course seeks to help students to critically think about the driving forces ("heroes"- supports and potential fixers of the problem) and the restraining forces ("villains"- forces causing harm) to women and girls' education across the globe with a focus on Africa and South Asia. We will examine various aspects of women and girls? schooling experiences in relation to a wide range of issues including masculinities, war and migration, child marriage, poverty, and culture.
