Open to First-Year students only. Across educational spaces in the United States, there are language differences impacting our intercultural communication. Many students speak more than one language. Other students speak different dialects of the same language. Every student speaks their own idiolect, meaning they have a unique way of using language that is particular to their social identities. Our language differences relate to different aspects our social identities, including our race, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic class, gender, age, or geographic location (among other factors). In this introductory course, we will think in new ways about intercultural communication in educational settings. We will explore different aspects of our social identities, considering how the language we use relates to our multiple identities.
