We cannot will the happy accidents that inform some of the best creative breakthroughs, but we can train ourselves to be perceptive and set up playful circumstances in which an unpredictable flow of creative making can occur. This course is an introduction to journaling, comic creation and other spontaneous art exercises as a practice in heightening awareness, memory and flexible creativity. It will serve both as an introduction to life in your new university community, including exploration of opportunities and service available to you on campus, as well as an introduction to practices designed to stretch our creative muscles beyond what we think is currently possible. In this class, we will take play seriously. We will practice seeing the fantastic within the mundane. We will create the conditions for spontaneity and use our experiments with images and words as vessels to hold memory, documenting the beginning of our new lives on campus.
Open to first-year Humanities and Fine Arts Exploratory Track students and first-year HFA Majors.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
