Chronological survey covering pre-jazz, ragtime, blues, New Orleans/Chicago, early swing, swing, bop, the '50s (cool, hardbop, thirdstream), '60s, '70s, '80s to present, through lectures, listening, readings, writing, and live performances. Guest lecturers usually include many members of the music faculty. (Gen.Ed. AT, DU)
Open to Non-Music majors only. Open to Non-Music majors and Music majors not in JAAMS (Jazz and African-American Music) concentrations. BMUS (JAAMS) and BA (JAAMS) enroll in MUSIC 295J instead (offered alternate years).
