What are the benefits of greenways? How can planners and landscape architects design our open space and recreation system to better the lives of the people that live near them? Come and explore Benton MacKaye?s original 1921 vision for the famous backpacking trek, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). This primarily rural greenway that extends from Maine to Georgia not only contributes to the personal growth of those hikers who dare to journey into its wilderness, but also transforms its surrounding communities. This seminar tells the campfire stories of `trailside? neighborhoods and their interactions with America?s most prominent historic and cultural landscapes, greenways, and parks since the early 20th century. Gain hands-on mapping, sketching, and research skills while imagining how MacKaye?s approach to regional planning and resource management may have transformed the New England region, parallel thru-trails, and even the world if his vision was achieved.
