Scientific research is fascinating. This course is designed to introduce you to ethical issues in conducting research involving human subjects and to explore the historic exploitation of marginalized populations. We will read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which tells the true story of Lacks, an African American tobacco farmer whose cells were taken without her consent. Case studies will be used to explore other ethical issues in research, such as conflicts of interest and new coronavirus challenge studies. Lastly, students will develop a research question, create a survey questionnaire, prepare an informed consent document and collect and analyze data from the survey following current ethical guidelines.
