This course will investigate the ways in which the diet and entertainment industries have driven the narratives of beauty globally, and how these narratives feed into discourses around food, identity, and the construction of dysmorphic bodies. Students will come to understand the socio-cultural functions of food and its role in identity construction; eating disorders and their health implications; and gain global perspectives on the body positivism movement. Creative assignments including a photovoice project will sharpen student?s observational and analytical skills.
