This course is for students interested in teaching children using art as a vehicle for learning and self-expression. During class time we will explore various methods, materials, and procedures for teaching art to children in grades K-6. Class meetings will include discussions and exploration of contemporary issues within the field of Art Education and an in-depth exploration of the lesson planning process. Additionally, we will explore theoretical, practical and creative approaches for teaching visual arts to elementary school children. Students will work in groups and individually to plan lessons and prepare to hands-on team teach in an after-school art program in a local elementary school.
Several class sessions will take place at local schools as the service learning component of this course.
