Methods of nonlinear analysis for finite dimensional problems in Chemical Engineering. Existence and uniqueness of solutions to nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Phase plane analysis, bifurcation theory, limit cycles and Hopf bifurcations. Lyapunov?s direct method of analysis for nonlinear systems. Computational techniques used in the analysis of nonlinear systems. Applications in chemical reactors, catalysis, biochemical systems, reaction-diffusion problems, and transport phenomena.
Open to CHEM-ENG Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students only. Undergraduates who wish to take the course will need permission of the instructor to enroll and should have taken ChE 320, 330 and Math 331. Please see Tami in 112E Goessmann Lab for override.
