The course explores the social role and meaning of some of the most important actresses of post-WWII Italian cinema, such as Anna Magnani, Sofia Loren, and many others. Far from being clones of Hollywood's domesticated divas, Italian actresses always point out to the crucial problems of rapidly modernizing society: personal autonomy, relating to others, relating to power, awareness of one's own image, etc. In short, Italian women are "the active face of the crisis" (Giorgio Tinazzi).
