Anne Frank is a seminal Holocaust voice. We will read not only her diary, but also her many essays, short stories, and the five chapters of the novel she never completed. So, too, will we read the diary and letters of Etty Hillesum, whose slightly older and equally crucial Holocaust voice was silenced in Auschwitz. Both women's lives and work will be examined against the backdrop of the Nazi invasion of Holland and the Dutch response, both rescue efforts and collaboration. In addition to these texts, we will assess several cinematic works, dramatic and documentary, that have attempted to portray Anne Frank and this period of history.
