This course is an advanced, discussion-based look at the principles and measurement of properties related to polymer interfaces and thin films. This topic is of central importance to numerous applications/fields at the forefront of today's leading technologies, including nano- and bio-technology. The first half of the course will cover topics such as interfacial energy and wetting, thin film characterization techniques, and mechanics of thin films. The second half of the course will focus on the development of the theory of Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts to describe the energy and forces associated with the development of solid polymer interface. Topics including adhesion under shear loadings, polymer friction, and the adhesion between glassy polymers will also be covered.
