Since the introduction of cultural studies as a mode of inquiry twenty five years ago, Spanish departments in the US have changed dramatically (Graham & Labanyi 1995; Jordan & Morgan-Tamosunas 2000). Academic programs have broadened their subject matter and scholars have responded by adapting their epistemological foundations. At present, literary studies approaches share the space with cultural studies and closely related fields such as visual studies, performance studies, gender and sexuality studies. In addition, the field has been reshaped by a consideration of the multilingual and plurinational configuration of Spain. In this seminar we will study cultural products, processes, and examples of scholarship that are representative of the practice of Spanish cultural studies with a focus on the twentieth and twenty-first century. We aim at examining the ongoing debates and questions as well as recent developments in the field. Taught in Spanish.
