In this seminar we will focus on the joyful exploration of Afro-Latina/o/x texts which confront and respond to racism, colorism, social issues, and current events. As a class, we will consider the uses and efficacy of terminology such as "Latinx" and "Afro-Latinidad;" discuss the historical, personal, and socio-political significance of recognizing Black roots as Latin(x) people; learn about the burgeoning field of Afro-Latin(x) American studies; explore and analyze art, music, and writing by and about Afro-Latinx folks; and engage with the possibilities and actualities of both Afrofuturism and (Afro-)Latinx participation in the Black Lives Matter and other social justice movements. Central questions shaping our explorations will be: How are Afro-Latinx artists, writers, and scholars creating fresh, empowered visions for the future through understanding both the beautiful and brutal parts of Afro-Latinx experiences as individuals and diasporic communities? What is the role of critique in productively resisting and re-visioning -- in promoting agency and utopian visions while pushing back against the socio-cultural and political forces that would seek to limit that agency and vision? In other words, how are the critical and utopian intimately related? As a class community, we will seek to produce knowledge, not simply consume it. As such, in-class participation and the sharing of thoughts, reflections, and ideas will be central to our learning practice.

Open to first-year Humanities and Fine Arts Exploratory Track students and first-year HFA Majors.
