This course addresses the historical and contemporary intersection between criminal and im/migration law, often referred to as "crimmigration." We will discuss the use of the criminal justice system, including policing and mass incarceration, as part of the immigration enforcement apparatus. Topics include the interplay between the securitization of borders, institutional racism, detention, deportation and criminal law, as well as the evolution of criminal justice as a form of migration control, the implications of cooperation between law enforcement and immigration authorities, and the role of race and ethnicity in the enforcement of immigration policy. We will consider the motivations of policies related to im/migration and identify the implications of these policies on individuals, families, and society at large. We will also look at examples of how activists have worked to bolster immigrant rights and improve national and international migration policies. The course will cover immigration policies in the United States as well as those in other parts of the world.
